Among the many areas of dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery is one of the most specialized. In order to earn the degree of an oral surgeon, he or she must spend an additional four years in a hospital residency. Oral surgeons are capable of performing advanced procedures that general dentists are not able to perform due to their cross-training with other kinds of doctors.
Our office employs an Oral Surgeon that can IV sedate for wisdom teeth extractions and other extractions, if conscious sedation is not right for you. Call to schedule a consult with Dr Engle to determine which option is best for you.
Oral surgeons are specially trained to work on the bones and soft tissues that make up the mouth. The treatments they provide range from the removal of wisdom teeth to reconstructive surgery of the face. It should be noted that oral surgery is usually not a routine dental procedure and requires more in-depth anesthesia and sedation than what you would find in a dental office, as well as recovery time.
