An endodontist is a dentist who uses treatments and procedures to save a tooth when it becomes infected or injured. During endodontic treatment, the tissues that surround the root of the tooth are treated. The most common type of treatment is root canal therapy. Don’t worry, a root canal is not as painful as popular culture may lead you to believe. The purpose of root canals is to eliminate pain, not to cause it.
Endodontics (root canal therapy) treats the inside of your tooth. Located inside every tooth is a hollow space occupied by the tooth pulp, which helps teeth detect heat and cold and is essentially what keeps a tooth alive. If the pulp dies or becomes infected, the tooth requires a root canal.
It is possible for a tooth that needs a root canal to exhibit signs and symptoms such as pain, abscesses, and swelling. There may be no obvious symptoms in many cases, which is why it is important to visit your dentist regularly. They are trained to recognize warning signs that you may not notice.
When caught early, tooth decay can be easily treated by a general dentist with a filling. The decay may spread into the soft tissue that protects the nerves if left untreated. To save the tooth, endodontic treatment is required. An abscess can form if the decay goes too far, exposing the infection and allowing it to spread. In extreme cases, extraction and prosthetic replacement are the only options.
Natural teeth should always be saved. Despite vast improvements in prosthetics, they will never match a natural tooth’s appearance, feel, or function. In addition, they require multiple dental visits and are often more expensive than endodontic procedures.
Some symptoms may be noticeable when decay has spread to the root of a tooth. An infected tooth may experience pain, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling, or discoloration after a root canal. Some patients have no symptoms. In most cases, dentists discover endodontic treatment during a patient’s hygiene appointment.
Although general dentists are trained in basic endodontics, they commonly refer patients to endodontists for the treatment of more complex cases.
In order to preserve your natural teeth & keep you smiling, endodontists complete at least two additional years of training. Their expertise & advanced tools enable them to handle both routine & difficult cases with greater confidence & success.
Root canal treatment involves completely cleaning out all of the tooth’s root canals to prevent decay from spreading. It can be more difficult to perform root canal therapy without an endodontist’s specialized training and technology when the root canal is more complex or slender.
Endodontists work hard to reverse the negative perception of root canals. During their procedure, they are trained in anesthetics to ensure patient comfort. Their specialized training also allows them to diagnose pain in the mouth & face that might otherwise be difficult to diagnose.
