Dental sedation is widely recognized as a treatment for anxiety. Medication is used to relax your body and mind.
Conscious sedation allows you to communicate with the dentist while awake. During your procedure, you will feel drowsy, calm, and comfortable. While you will be awake, you may have trouble remembering details about your appointment. You may not remember anything!
Do you dread going to the dentist? Have bad experiences in the past caused you to avoid or miss recent dental appointments? You are not alone. There are millions of patients worldwide who fear dental work. We’re here to help.
We don’t want you to suffer in silence and neglect your oral health. From mild nervousness to extreme phobias, we offer sedation dentistry to patients of all ages. Keeping your dental hygiene requires your comfort at the dentist.
Laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, is the lightest form of sedation. Patients receive it through a nose mask. The dentist can precisely adjust the amount of gas you are breathing whenever you need more or less. After the dentist turns off the nitrous oxide, you'll be back to normal within minutes! After your appointment, you can drive home. Nausea, headaches, and dizziness are the most common side effects.
Oral sedation involves taking an anti-anxiety pill about an hour before treatment. It is an easy form of sedation that doesn't require much in-office equipment or maintenance. You will need a friend or family member to drive you home after oral sedation, unlike nitrous oxide.
IV sedation is the strongest form of conscious sedation. The dentist uses the same kind of medication as oral sedation but injects it directly into your bloodstream. The drug kicks in faster & stronger. Also, the dentist can adjust the dosage so you don't get too sedated. The recovery from IV sedation will be faster than from oral sedation, but you'll still need a driver.
There are a few things you should do before receiving any of these forms of sedation. Consult with us first to see if you are a candidate for sedation. A number of medical conditions can be worsened by dental sedation, including heart, lung, and liver problems. Sedation may endanger the life and development of a nursing or pregnant woman. Consult our team or your primary care doctor about sedation risks.
You will also need to provide us with a list of prescription, over-the-counter, and dietary supplements you take regularly. Dental sedatives may interact negatively with some.
Last but not least, you should refrain from eating or drinking anything other than clear liquids for six hours before your appointment. Please arrange for someone to drive you to and from our office if you are receiving oral or IV sedation. Ensure that your schedule is clear for the remainder of the day and refrain from driving, engaging in strenuous physical activity, or operating heavy machinery until the following day.
Don’t let dental fear keep you from achieving the beautiful smile you deserve. Find out which type of sedation is appropriate for you by contacting us today.
